It happens many times. Actually it happens everyday, although in different ways, shapes and forms: from choosing the shirt you're gonna wear for the day to the person you're marrying.
Although, my focus here are those big decision where you have only 2 options to choose from. The 2 options that drive your life, where destiny can become history, and the future comes to present. The problem and solution will always be the same: choice.
(Now, I could make some awesome references to The Matrix here, but I'll leave it alone so no one will crucify me :P )
But how do you make your choice? What's your decisive factor? What is the weight that makes the balance lean to one side?
For some people is their heart, their impulse, the instinct. For others is a matter of logic, numbers, convenience, hard-solid-facts, pros and cons. Most people balance those together, and finally for us Christians it's God who has the final word... Or at least that's how it should be.
The reason why I say "that's how it should be" is because the concept of letting God make the decisions for us can be easily bent to match our own wishes and desires. Starting with that same thought that "God's will is what is in my heart, He put it there". The problem with this idea is that our heart is very deceitful, as the very Word of God warns us:
"The heart is deceitful above all things
and beyond cure.
Who can understand it?"

People who have a good relationship with God can discern when He is speaking to them through their spirit, even when He says to do something that is the opposite of what they wanted. Because to hear God's voice speaking to you is just like being in love: there's no way to describe, you just know it...
One of the biggest worries come from when you see the bifurcation on the road, it's getting near, you will have to make a choice, but God doesn't seem to respond your prayers, you're desperately in need of guidance, but God seems to be calm, crossed arms, closed eyes, silent, like knowing the answer but waiting until the last minute to tell you... And that gets under my skin sometimes.
Never forget though that if Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior then He will guide you, doesn't matter how silent or distant you think He is. If you're a God's child, your Father won't abandon you, never. He's just waiting for the right time to tell you what you need to know. Don't lose hope, don't lose faith, just trust Him, and be patient.

Ps.: just don't forget to open your ears when God finally speaks ;)
